“The Stinger Series custom guitars are all about The TONE!” according to Edwin Wilson, who was at the time, the Gibson Historic Program Manager and the man behind the magic of the Stinger Series guitars. In Commemoration of their 25th Anniversary, Music Machine of Washington, who was one of Gibson’s biggest Dealers, had Gibson do a 500 guitar custom run to their spec’s called the Stinger series. The owner of Music Machine, Dave Carpenter, has an original ’59 burst with a stinger painted on the back of the headstock, that was pictured in Yasuhiko Iwanade’s “BEAUTY OF THE ‘BURST.” So, the MM Stinger series was modeled after that guitar. The Stinger Series would be the largest custom run to date. There would be many and varied specifications, changing from model to model. The entire Stinger Series would have a black stinger painted on the back of the headstock like the more expensive Gibson models such as the Gibson L5 and Super 400 and Dave’s original ’59 Burst. The story goes that if there were any imperfections in the wood the stinger was painted on the back of the headstock to cover it. The entire Stinger Series would have Brazilian Rosewood Fretboards (’54-’60) and also get a special and extra series number on the back of the peghead along with the regular Gibson serial number. The Stinger Series special numbers start with MM for Music Machine and came with an additional and special certificate of authenticity.

The Stinger series was the debut for several finishes from Gibson Custom Art and Historic. These finishes were inspired by a particular page in the Beauty of the Burst book. Regardless of the neck size, the depth of the figure or the finish these Gibson Les Paul guitars were built for tone and have the sweetest sounding wood of any LP ever!

This completely breathtaking 1954 Les Paul Reissue is a gem that has to be seen and played to be believed. This remarkable guitar features one of the most magnificent Hard Rock Maple A Quilt tops available from the Gibson Custom Shop. This is  brought to life even more via the incredible “Iguana Burst” finish, making it one of the more unique, deeply rare and beautiful Les Pauls available. This is the only one we know of!!

Dave Carpenter; owner of Music Machine, alongside Edwin Wilson at Gibson did very selective wood pulls for the building of the “MM” specific Les Pauls. They hand picked very best tops available for these guitars. The quilts and flames were some of the deepest 5A tops seen since the “good wood” years in the 90’s. These guitars sound just incredible…very different than regular reissues. The tone is just so rich with some of the most pronounced and musical mids and lows ever heard in a Les Paul. Dave Carpenter and Edwin Wilson explain that the neck blank for these guitars was so important to them because the neck acts like a big tuning fork. For reason they picked heavy neck blanks for these builds. Uniquely, much of the overall weight of the guitar is in the neck, but is in NO WAY “neck heavy” like some SG’s for example. This is just one of many reasons for the jaw dropping tones produced by these rare Les Pauls.
This magnificent ’54 reissue was detailed to the utmost level scrutiny before being set up with 10-46 gauge strings and dialed in to perfection. A rare and remarkable instrument. A true testament to the incredible talent and craftmanship of the luthiers at Gibson. Includes all case candy, hang tags and certificate of authenticity. Ships in original Gibson Historic Hard Shell case. The guitar is in excellent condition except for a few very small scratches on the back illustrated in the photos above.
